From slave to doctor

Screen Shot 2018-09-03 at 5.45.44 PM

I was going through obits when I stumbled across a particularly interesting one. A. E. Raymond was a slave, fought in the Civil War on a steamship and became a doctor in Darrow. Excuse the cloying copy about Dr. Raymond always knowing his place. This was written in 1916.

I looked to see if I could find his grave but had no luck. I’d love to know more of Dr. Raymond’s story.

So I did a little more digging and discovered that A. E. Raymond was Agness Ernest Raymond (Agness?).

His wife was Celestine Martin. It appears that they had no children.
